Losing someone you love changes the shape of ordinary days. A cremation necklace offers a private way to keep a small, meaningful portion of them close. Many people feel a little uncertain the first time they fill the pendant. This guide walks you through the process calmly and clearly so you can focus on the meaning rather than the mechanics.
What You Will Need
Most of our cremation jewellery comes with a filling kit. If your chosen piece doesn’t include one, we also sell a kit separately.
Typical contents include:
- A funnel (usually plastic or metal)
- A tiny screwdriver or tool for the screw-top chamber
- Occasionally a small brush or spoon
You will also need a clean, well-lit surface and the ashes (or other keepsake material such as a lock of hair or fur).
Step-by-Step Filling Instructions
-
Prepare a quiet space
Choose a clean, flat surface with good light. Place a sheet of white paper or a soft cloth underneath so any tiny particles are easy to see and recover.
-
Open the chamber
Most of our stainless-steel pendants use a discreet screw-top or threaded base. Use the tool provided (or a small precision screwdriver) to gently unscrew the closure. Work slowly so the threads remain clean.
-
Position the funnel
Insert the narrow end of the funnel into the opening of the pendant. Hold the pendant steady with one hand.
-
Add a small amount of ash
Cremation jewellery is designed to hold only a symbolic portion — usually a pinch, not a large quantity. Use the spoon or carefully tip a very small amount into the funnel. A little goes a long way.
-
Settle the contents
Gently tap the pendant a few times so the ash settles at the bottom of the chamber. This helps prevent particles from catching in the threads.
-
Close securely
Remove the funnel and screw the closure back on firmly but without forcing it. Check that the seal sits flush.
-
Clean the exterior
Wipe the outside of the pendant with a soft, dry cloth. If any ash remains on the surface, a slightly damp cloth followed by thorough drying works well.
Extra Tips for Peace of Mind
- Work over a contained area so nothing is lost.
- If you prefer not to handle the ashes yourself, many funeral directors or family members are happy to help.
- Once sealed, the chamber is designed to stay closed during normal wear. Avoid submerging the pendant in water for long periods.
- The same process works for hair, pet fur, dried flowers, or soil from a meaningful place.
Your cremation necklace is more than a container. It is a quiet companion that travels with you. Taking a few unhurried minutes to fill it is part of the care you continue to give.
